'Rock and Roll', at least the term, comes from 'Rockin' and Ballin', a phrase used to describe hot, sultry nights with a woman in bed.
In some of these old apartment buildings, everybody could hear what was going on, with the bed squeaking, and everything else.
Anyways, one of my favorite kinds of music is based on all of this.
'Rock and Roll' is all about getting it on. When you listen to other bland music from the same time period, it feels without energy or passion or nothin'. It feels like shopping mall music.
Anyway, I grew up on 'Rock and Roll', and funny enough, the band that stuck out in my mind as a seven year old was 'The Steve Miller Band'. They had a sound to their band which was really good. It sounded great.
I didn't know what to think of all the 60's stuff, but I did really like the updated, modern, contemporary sound of Steve Miller, with the latest recording techniques. Stuff before that sounded 'dated' to me. Steve Miller had 'it', and my favorite song that I would wait to listen to was 'Fly Like An Eagle', because it sounded like 'the future'. It was really cool.
Okay, so that is where I started.
Where I am right now with things, is, well, Motorhead is still out there playing what they describe as 'Rock and Roll'.
It is true. Motorhead is a rock and roll band. A loud one, but it is rock and roll. And they are fun to see live, and they have a good time. They have the rock and roll spirit in them.
Just so you know, Lemmy was a roadie for Jimi Hendrix long ago.
So, why write about rock and roll? Isn't it dead? I thought it was, but it keeps coming back.
I'm not really impressed with a lot of today's music, where they barely use real instruments anymore, and things have an electronic drum track.
But I figure that I don't even have to worry about that stuff, and just write about the music that I really like and care for.
A lot of people really need a history of rock and roll, and maybe they wouldn't listen to so much crap music. I guess they only listen to it because it is shoved down their throats by the media.
I don't care about 'American Idol' or all that talent show crap. I have nothing to do with it. I find all that stuff pretty unwatchable, and a waste of time, especially when there are so many real good musicians to listen to.
It's all Disney's fault, but that is another story.
But what I want to write about is Buddy Holly, Chuck Berry, Beatles, Stones, The Who...and all those other bands that have that rock and roll spirit in them. That is all I cared about, because it was about freedom and rebellion, my two favorite things in the world.
So, I hope this is a good enough intro for now. I'll work on it later. Or not. It depends on my laziness factor.
Yeah, I was going to give up on rock and roll, and not make a blog about it, then I realized I had to because that is what I am...a rock and roller.
I am not a rocker, and never was. I always liked the 'roll' part of it. That's what makes it good.
